Abstract

Social functioning is an ability that children need develop to live in a society, yet is the very one that most children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) do not have as expected. Recent research indicates that children with ASD show remarkable qualities and amounts of social interactions with robots (e.g., Cho, Kwon, & Choi, 2009). Although robotics has still space for improvement and the study of improved interaction between cognitive robots and children with ASD is in its infancy period, cognitive robot-based interventions seem to have practical and theoretical potentials for ASD. In this research, therefore we review recent research on cognitive robots and autism, analyze important characteristics and limitations, and make suggestions for future research and technologies.
